  • I. Prepare AED equipment and accessories
    • Regular functionality check of AED equipment and accessories such as resuscitation mask, gloves, razors, gauze wipes, Spare battery for AED, blanket, pen and paper, towels.
    • Place AED equipment on stand-by for immediate access during an emergency to include AED machine (trainer type) and portable oxygen tank with regulator set.
  • II. Prepare AED for use in defibrillation
    • Confirm that the patient needs defibrillation
    • Check that conditions are safe for the use of AED
    • Turn on AED and follow prompts
    • Apply electrode to the patient’s chest
    • Respond to the AED prompt
    • Deliver shock in an appropriate and safe manner when prompted
    • Check for signs of life and commence CPR if required
  • III. Operate AED machine
    • Observe defibrillation safety procedure per ILS standard in Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue
    • Turn on AED and follow start-up prompts in preparation for operation of AED machine.
    • Connect electrode pads to the chest of victim and deliver shock following AED prompts per manufacturers specification.
    • Follow AED specific instructions per manufacturer’s specification.
    • Maintain basic life support protocol voice prompted by AED machine per manufacturer’s specification.
    • Re-assess victim for further intervention per ILS standard in Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue
  • IV. Administer oxygen therapy to victim
    • Identify if victim is in need of oxygen therapy and prepare necessary materials for oxygen therapy
    • Determine safe environment for oxygen therapy and exercise safety protocols in oxygen deployment.
    • Perform appropriate oxygen therapy method to victim per ILS standard in Public Safety and Aquatic Rescue.
  • V. Oxygen Therapy Methods
    • Conscious patient and does not want to use mask-provide oxygen-rich air without mask
    • Conscious patient – place mask onto patient’s face from the chest upwards, cupping the patient’s chin in the mask first and the gently placing the nosepiece into position
    • Unconscious breathing patient – oxygen should be administered in the lateral position while observing airway, breathing and signs of life
